Doggy Paddle Music

I met Dana Pagane and Mark Burch of Doggy Paddle Music on a previous “no budget” project called Mom, Can You Change My Name? Dana originally reached out to me after I made a crew call post on a local Facebook group. Her offer absolutely floored me when they offered to score our short film. They did such a great job that I called them up again for this.

To know these two people is a complete blessing. We spent several hours going over the score in person and through text and emails to get it perfect. Music is not my speciality at all but it is for sure Mark and Dana’s! They are not only talented but two of the nicest, most welcoming people you could ever meet.

If you have ever watched a movie you likely have a sense that the music is one of the most important parts of the presentation. It sets the mood, it immerses you, it invokes emotions and reactions. As a filmmaker we are faced with many challenges, but music often moves in the following stages:

  1. I wish we could get the rights to this popular song
  2. It would be cool to have an original score
  3. I guess I could work on my Garage Band skills
  4. I can search through some public domain, overused generic tracks.
  5. Who needs music anyway?

Thankfully, option 2 was available and willing to say yes to me (again). The results were nothing less than spectacular. Mark was very patient and intent on getting it exactly they way Benton and I wanted it. The crazy thing is that he composed almost an hour of original music. He brought varying styles to break things up and flow with the story.

One of the most jaw-dropping things was when Mark said that he wanted to match the beat of the track to Seth’s running cadence. I loved his attention to detail and wanting to make it a truly custom experience.

I am forever grateful to work beside such talented and wonderful people. May we have many more projects together!
